Chapter Twelve

The dress was a little wide at the waist, but it felt so much better than the fancy garb she’d been wearing since the day she’d arrived in this century. She glanced at the charred blue dress lying in a heap on the ground. She could have died today. The thought of it left Sherri feeling weak all over. To shake off the horrible thought, she inhaled a deep breath and smiled at Mabel Weaver.

The only good thing to come from this ordeal was that at least now she was finally rid of that torture device they called a corset. She’d tried before to leave it off, but her fancy dress was too revealing without it. In the cotton dress Mabel gave her, she had plenty of room and didn’t need to strap her waist so tight that she nearly passed out.

“I don’t know how I’m ever going to repay you for all you’re doing for me.” Sherri leaned forward and gave the other woman a hug.

Mabel Weaver stood stiffly for a moment, then relaxed and hesitantly returned the gesture.

“I wasn’t quite sure about you when I first saw you, when Maude was clinging to your dress.” Mabel laughed. “You’re not at all what I expected from a privileged aristocrat from the east.”

Sherri stepped out of the woman’s embrace. She forced her smile to remain plastered on her face and blinked to keep the tears at bay. Hopefully, Mabel’s words meant that she was doing something right. For the first time in her life, someone was completely sincere and honest with her.

There was no pretense among Mabel and the rest of the people on this wagon train. They had so little in material possessions, yet they gave freely and were always ready to help. Even though they assumed she had money, they didn’t try to manipulate her to give them anything. She was still met with cautious and even suspicious looks from some of the women, and there was no doubt they talked about her when she wasn’t within earshot.

Who could blame them? There hadn’t been much time to socialize, and it was obvious for all to see that Sherri struggled with the daily chores. Mabel had been more than patient with her, but so far, she hadn’t allowed her to do much cooking. This morning, Sherri had wanted to surprise Mabel by getting the fire started while Mabel was at the creek. What a disaster that had turned out to be.

A shudder passed through her as her insides roiled in turmoil and fear about what had almost happened to her. Since her arrival in the nineteenth century, everything had been a struggle, and now she’d nearly been badly burned. She might have even died. The reality of it hit her as hard as slamming into a brick wall.

As much as she tried, that thought wouldn’t leave her alone. She didn’t belong here, yet there was no way she could go back home. She had to stick it out
